Zebras Fall to Hornets 2-1

12/12/2013 9:08:00 AM

The Middlesex girls' varsity ice hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision against Proctor Academy on Wednesday evening on their home ice. The Hornets jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first period and the Zebras were never quite able to recover.

Proctor came out ready to battle and as a result lit up the lamp just 4:24 into play. Middlesex struggled to find their momentum for the remainder of the period and with just 41 seconds left, the Hornets struck again on a power play to take the 2-0 lead.

After regrouping in the locker room, the Zebras stepped onto the ice and looked like an entirely different team in the second period. They started to generate their passing game and tightened up their defensive zone coverage.  Maddie Winslow '14 broke open the scoring for the Zebras at the 10:58 mark with a beautiful shot-assisted by classmates Cici Frattasio and Arushi Ray- to the top left corner of the net.  Middlesex continued to challenge the Hornets' goaltender but were unable to add any more tallies to the scoreboard.

Although the Zebras outshot their opponent 7-4 in the third period, their efforts were thwarted by the Hornets' solid defensive play. As the time ticked away on the clock, Middlesex pulled goaltender Christina Cleroux '14 for the 6 v 5 advantage but ultimately came up one goal short.

The Zebras will look to rebound when they host Rivers on Friday, December 13 in Pratt Arena for their final game before heading into the holiday tournament. The puck drops at 4:30pm.
