In order to reach their team goal of a winning season, the 2013 varsity football team knew they would have their work cut out for them against a talented Thayer squad on Parents' Weekend. 

Both teams looked a bit nervous through a scoreless first quarter, with the MX defensive front of Steve Zawada '15, Ben Canniff '15, Will Baxter '15, Guy Kato '15, Kai Long '16, and Alex Wagner '16 playing tough against Thayer's run game.  The MX offense broke through first in the second quarter on a halfback pass from Hasani Figueroa '14 to Drew Coash '14 who made an impressive run after the catch for a 62 yard touchdown. Sam Carlin '15 added the extra point kick for a 7-0 lead. The teams then traded offensive possessions but the score remained 7-0 into halftime. 

Coming out after the half, Sam Carlin sparked MX with a return to the Thayer 20 yard line that ignited a three touchdown explosion in the third quarter: a two yard run by Figueroa; a 50 yard Figueroa run following a Nick Colangelo '14 interception; and a four yard run by George Morris '15 set up by the passing of QB Austin Dorsey '16 to receivers Coash, Hamza Usman '15 and Jack Lyne '16. At the end of the third quarter, MX led 28-0 MX. 

The Thayer offense answered early in the fourth quarter with two quick scores, cutting the lead to 28-14 by the middle of the final frame. The MX offense demonstrated outstanding resilience on their next possession after recovering an on-side kick by driving the ball, taking valuable time off the clock, and scoring on a Morris one yard run to extend the lead to 35-14.  Thayer would tally one more touchdown ending the game with a 35-21 MX victory .

Special mention has to go to two groups, first, the offensive line of Conor Sloan '15, Steve Zawada, Walker Griggs '15, Ben Canniff , Will Baxter and Jack Lyne for their outstanding work all game.  Also, our pass defenders, linebackers Charlie Owen '14, James Burr '15, Ben Marchand '15, George Morris, Sam Carlin and secondary of Hasani Figueroa, Nick Colangelo '14 and John Schuster '15 for their play in the second half after Thayer committed to a total ariel attack.             

Middlesex hits the road next on Friday, November 1st to take on Milton Academy for a 3:00pm ISL showdown.
