The Zebras were mentally and physically prepared for every scenario stepping into the semifinal game vs. #5 Cushing on Saturday, November 16. In the first half, both teams stepped to the ball and made sound defensive tackles, but Middlesex had the edge with more ball possession and a crisp passing game. Â
In the second half, Cushing got on the board when a foul was called and the Zebras forwards and midfielders -thinking it was their ball- ran up field to receive the self start. Â However, the ball was in fact awarded to Cushing and the opponent carried the ball to the cage with urgency, and on a 2 v 1, the Penguins put the ball in the net to take the 1-0 lead. Â The mighty Zebras quickly ran back to the circle, angry about their mishap, and began a 26-minute battle with the Cushing defenders and goalkeeper. Â In that time, the Cushing team crossed the 50-yard line just twice, as Middlesex held on to possession for nearly all of the remaining time. Â They earned corners, took shots that narrowely missed the cage, and scored a goal that was called back because it was shot outside of the circle. Â The Cushing goalie made several incredible saves, frustrating the Zebras offense on several occasions. Â
As the time dwindled, the Zebras fought harder, displaying heart, passion, unselfishness, and smart play. Â However, despite the great effort, they were unable to finish in the circle and lost the game 1-0. Â The game was very frustrating for the Zebras as they out shot the Cushing Penguins 8-1. The better team however, did not come out on top today. Â Although the pain of the loss resonates with the team, it should not overshadow an incredible season. Â The leadership exhibited all fall was brilliant, and the squad should be proud of all they accomplished as a powerful and cohesive unit.
The team ends the season with an overall record of 14-2-2 and says good bye to four outstanding seniors: Juliana Fiore, Cici Frattasio, Maddie Winslow and Sarah Tabeek.
