Friday games are always nerve-racking, leaving the football coaching staff to ask themselves the following questions: Did the team have enough time to prepare in a short week? Are the players focused on the game with a long weekend break about to begin? Well the MX 11 answered those questions quickly and consistently throughout this year's annual tilt with Groton. The Zebras from Concord, MA hit the ground running and as a result came home with a well fought 17-14 victory.
MX got on the board first with a drive that featured a key third down pass of 30 yards from quarterback John Schuster '15 to wide receiver Drew Coash '14, and then depended on the running tandem of Hasani Figueroa '14 and George Morris '15. Figueroa would score on a nifty 5 yard run and Sam Carlin '15 added the point after for a first quarter lead of 7-0 (which would stand through halftime).
The teams exchanged offensive possessions early in the third period but it was Groton who was able to capitalize first on a 4 yard run, tying the score at 7-7. After the Groton score, the defense tightened and the offense moved into high gear scoring twice in the fourth quarter. The first on a 2 yard run by Figueroa and the second on a 26 yard field goal by Carlin, which proved to be the difference in the victory, to stretch the MX lead to 17-7. Groton continued to press and eventually capitalized on two long passes and a 2 yard run to cut the lead to 17-14. The ensuing on-side kick was recovered by the MX hands-team and the offense ran out the clock for the victory.
Safety Nick Colangelo '14 had 2 big interceptions and Sam Carlin had a key fumble recovery to lead the defensive effort. Wide receiver Drew Coash '14 had a great day with three catches for 62 yards and Hasani Figueroa ended the game with 132 yards rushing.
