Plagued by recent illnesses, a motley crew of Zebras in new lineups traveled to the 1250-meter Powerhouse Stretch on the Charles River to race BB&N and Newton Country Day School. The girls were able to overcome adversity to pull off the wins in all races!
In the fourth boat race, all three crews were even through the first 250 meters, when Middlesex and BB&N made their moves and broke away from NCDS. Middlesex made a move to pull ahead only to find themselves staring at the bow of the Charles River Tour Boat as it barreled down their lane! Coxswain Niki '13 steered a safe course but Middlesex lost a few seats to BB&N. With a solid sprint, the Zebras were able to maintain a slim lead to beat BB&N by 1.4 seconds. The third boat jumped off to a nice lead off the start, and as the race progressed they continued to gain seconds, winning by a solid margin. While the second boat had a solid start, they lost momentum in the middle of the race and found themselves head-to-head with both BB&N and NCDS. At the halfway mark Middlesex took a move and broke away with a three-seat lead. BB&N countered with a move of their own, but Middlesex held them off during the sprint and finished ahead by almost a boat length. The first boat had a tight race as BB&N and Middlesex broke off early and battled each other to the halfway mark. Middlesex took a few seats and were able to hold on to the slimmest of leads, even as BB&N tried to catch the Zebras with an early sprint. Coxswain Noelle '12 countered by calling her crew's sprint early, and Middlesex regained their margin to win by 2 seconds.
