Girls' Crew Continues to Race Strong Season

5/14/2012 12:05:00 PM

With only two weeks to go until NEIRA's, the girls' crew team looked to continue its solid season as they competed against Deerfield and Nobles at home on the Concord River.

In the fourth boat race, Deerfield dropped off the pace after the settle and MX and Nobles battled down the entire 1500-meter course.  While Nobles had some difficult staying on course, cutting off two buoys, the MX boat stayed focused.  With skilled steering by coxswain Niki '13, they hugged the buoys in Lane 1, took a great sprint, and pulled off the win a mere second ahead of Nobles.  In the third boat race, Nobles and MX again took off on the start and gained open water quickly on Deerfield.  MX and Nobles fought to gain seats on one another, but it was not until the last thirty strokes when MX pushed out a power ten to make a move, and they flew past Nobles to win by seven seconds.  The second boat race was between MX and Deerfield, as the two crews shot ahead early.  MX made a move at the 1000-meter mark to gain seats and they held the lead over Deerfield right through the finish.  The final race of the day was another close finish between MX and Nobles.  It was back-and-forth down the course until the last 250 meters when Nobles took an edge.  MX battled back, but Nobles countered and regained the lead in the last 15 strokes of the race, finishing a close three seconds ahead of MX.

The Middlesex girls are well poised for a strong finish as they race Pomfret at home next weekend.
