The girls’ varsity ice hockey team suffered a heartbreaking overtime loss to Proctor Academy on Sunday, March 4 for the Class B New England Championship title. After defeating Gunnery 3-1 in the semifinals, Middlesex entered the final game as the number one seed and with an overall record of 22-2 (the best in program history).
Although the Zebras were up by three entering the second, the Hornets fought their way back in the third to tie the game at 4-4 with 0:26 left on the clock. Both teams had numerous chances to put the game away early on into overtime but Proctor’s Kelcey Crawford and Middlesex’s Katie ’12 were unstoppable in the net. With 2:19 to go, the Hornets picked up a loose puck in the slot and riffled a shot top right to claim the 2012 New England Championship trophy.
Katie ended the game with a career high 58 saves and will undoubtedly continue to flourish in the net next year for Hamilton College. Fellow senior captains Jordan and Eliza left everything they had on the ice and will be greatly missed as they move on to Boston University and Williams in the fall.
The team would like to sincerely thank the entire Middlesex community for its overwhelming support throughout the entire winter. Although the season has come to an end, the girls will carry the memories of this year with them long after their
days of wearing a Middlesex jersey are over.
