The girls’ varsity hockey team traveled to Middletown, RI for their last regular season game against the Dragons of St. George’s. The team skated to a 4-2 victory and finishes the 2011-2012 campaign 20-2.
After a long bus ride, Middlesex struggled to find their momentum in the first 10:00 of play. Although the puck spent a majority of time in the offensive zone, the Zebras could not find the back of the net. Finally with 5:09 left in the period, Jordan ’12 opened the scoring for the afternoon when she lifted a shot over the right shoulder of the St.George’s goaltender. Several shifts later, Maddie ’14 received a pass from Jordan in the neutral zone and raced down the ice on a breakaway. With .07 left on the board, she pulled the goalie to her left and then quickly transferred the puck to her forehand and into the lower right corner of the net.
As Middlesex took the ice in the second, they skated with a new sense of urgency and purpose. Defense continued to pressure the puck from the blue line and challenged the Dragon’s goaltender with their shots from the point. At 11:59, Isabel ’13 fed Jordan a pass in the slot where the New York native quickly tucked the puck past the goal line for her second goal of the afternoon. With five minutes remaining in the period, Cici ’14 found Maddie in the neutral zone who fired a pass to Jordan at the blue line. Jordan collected the puck and spun around a St. George’s defenseman to score her second hat trick of the season on her back hand. St. George’s was able to get on the board before the period closed when their #17 picked up a loose puck in front of the MX net to bridge the four goal lead.
The third period was filled with plenty of action and excitement. Arushi ’14 moved up to the forward line while Jordan took a turn on defense. Eliza ’12, Hailey ’14, Maddie M. ’13, Sarah ’14, Nell ’14, Isabel, Cici and Maddie W. were relentless with
their shots on net but came up just short. Katie ’12 supported her teammates between the pipes and finished the game with 20 saves. Before the period came to a close, the Dragons lit up the the board once more to end the game at 4-2.
The Zebras now wait to hear word of the tournament standings and hope for a home ice contest on Wednesday, February 29.
