Girls' varsity hockey (19-2) traveled to Cambridge, MA on Wednesday, February 23 to take on a young but talented BB&N squad. Christina ‘14 had her most impressive performance in net to date with 29 saves to help lead her team to a 4-2 victory.
BB&N owned the first half of the period; as their last home game of the season, the Knights played with heart and a fiery determination. The Middlesex players quickly found their rhythm however and were able to get on the board with a power play goal by Maddie ’14 (assisted by Cici ’14 and Brooke ’14) with 5:14 left on the clock. Almost three minutes later, Jordan ’12 capitalized on a pass from Cici in front of the net to close the scoring for the period.
The Zebras dominated much of the second with strong passing sequences up and down the ice and aggressive defensive play at the offensive blue line. With 2:20 left in the period, Jordan found Arushi ‘14 at the point who executed a perfectly timed slap shot into the goal to put Middlesex on top by three. One minute later, BB&N responded with a goal of their own on a strong penalty kill shift where their #17 vaulted her shot into the top corner of the net. Entering the locker room, the Zebras prepared themselves for what would undoubtedly be a hard fought third period.
The final 15:00 belonged to the goaltenders. Christina and BB&N’s # 31 were unstoppable between the pipes, allowing only one goal a piece (out of numerous shots on net). At 12:29, Jordan scored her second goal of the afternoon with a powerful slap shot from the high slot (assisted my Cici and Maddie) to push the lead back up to three. 4:33 later, BB&N’s # 17 tallied her second goal of the game to help close the gap. For the remaining minutes of play however, the Middlesex defense did its job and prevented the Knights from scoring any more goals.
Middlesex will travel to St. George’s on Saturday, February 25 for their last regular season game at 2:00pm.
