Girls' Varsity Hockey Defeats Brooks on Senior Night, 5-1

2/18/2012 7:18:00 PM

The Middlesex girls’ varsity ice hockey team celebrated senior night on Friday, February 17 with a 5-1 win over Brooks. Jordan ’12 scored a hat trick while Christina ‘14 backstopped the Zebras in net with 24 saves.  After the game, the team recognized their three seniors, Eliza, Katie and Jordan for their four years of outstanding play and dedication to the Middlesex varsity ice hockey program.

The Zebras hit the ice ready to defend their ten game winning streak. Jordan got Middlesex on the board early as Maddie ’14 made a beautiful pass from the right where the senior lifted the puck past the Brook’s goaltender. Middlesex lit up the score board again a short time later when Jordan found Brooke ’14 at the blue line who fired a shot into the upper right corner of the net to take the 2-0 lead. Before the period came to a close, Brooks was able to score what would be their only goal of the evening on a power play.

Taking the ice to start the second, the Zebras knew they needed to continue to play hard. In last year’s contest against Brooks, the Bishops were able to tie the game at 3-3 after being down by two goals entering the third.  2:10 into the play,  Jordan scored her second of three goals off a feed from Cici ’14 to once again put Middlesex on top by two. The Bishops continued to challenge Christina with their aggressive play in front of the net but the sophomore showed her athletic prowess in the crease.  Brooke, Ashley ’13, Jeanie ’13, Leah ’15 and Arushi ‘ 14 worked together to protect their goalie and supported the offensive line all over the ice.

Middlesex began the third with the same fire and determination that they had had in the first. Halfway through the period, Maddie earned her second point of the night when she skillfully weaved her way through the Brook’s defense and converted her shot off of a pass from Jordan and Cici. 1: 04 later on the same shift, Jordan riffled a slap shot from the high slot (assisted by Eleanor ’13 and Maddie) to close for the night.

Although the score may not reflect it as such, the 5-1 victory was a hard fought battle from start to finish. The freshman, sophomores and juniors skated for their seniors and truly exemplified the meaning of team work.

The Zebras will return from a long weekend break to face BB&N in Cambridge, MA on Wednesday, February 22 at 2:30pm.
