Thrilling Finish as Zebras Defeat Spartans in OT

2/16/2012 10:33:00 AM

For the first time in five years, the Middlesex girls’ varsity ice hockey team defeated Lawrence Academy 1-0 on Wednesday, February 15 in Groton, MA. The score remained 0-0 at the end of regulation and just 9 seconds into overtime, the Zebras were able to secure the victory with a goal by Cici ’14 to take home their 17th win of the season.

Although the Spartans outshot the Zebras 36-27, the puck spent an equal amount of time at both ends of the ice.  Each team had three opportunities on the power play, but could not capitalize on the player up advantage. Katie ’12 was unstoppable between the pipes; denying numerous breakaways and pouncing on every loose puck that crossed her path. Throughout the entire 45:00 of play, the seasoned goaltender served as an inspiration to her teammates and was a driving force behind the big ISL victory.

The pace and excitement of the game only continued to increase as the minutes on the clock ticked down.  Both teams skated tirelessly from goal line to goal line and played with heart and determination.  Although it was their first overtime game of the season, Middlesex knew that in order to win they would have to stick together and play smart hockey.

As the puck dropped for the sudden death 5:00 overtime, Middlesex quickly gained control.  Jordan ’12 won the faceoff and looked to Maddie ’14 who was deep in the offensive zone.  Maddie collected the pass with composure and found classmate Cici in the slot who vaulted the puck past the Lawrence goaltender to leave Grant Rink with a 1-0 victory.

Middlesex returns to their home ice on Friday, February 16 when they face Brooks at 5:00pm.
