After weathering "Sandy" and taking a break from practice on Monday, the Zebras had one day to prepare for rival Class B team, Cushing. Middlesex knew it would be a tough game, and they prepared diligently on Tuesday as they looked to break Cushings' eight game winning streak.
The first half play resembled a ping-pong game as both teams made stops between the two 25 yard lines. The game was a bit choppy, and neither team fell into a small-passing game rhythm. The Zebras finally broke through and scored after taking two shots with 4:59 remaining in the half.
In the second half, Middlesex adjusted and began moving the ball more effectively, stunning the visiting Cushing players. Six minutes into the half, the Zebras struck again to take a 2-0 lead. Cushing ignited after the goal and began pressuring the Zebras defenders. Anna Toth and Juliana Fiore were relentless, but the Cushing players snuck through and scored a beautiful redirection goal into the top right corner of the cage with 18:33 remaining in the game. For the next six minutes, the Zebras held on tight as the Cushing team put tremendous pressure on the defensive line. Stymied by the tough Zebra defenders, the explosive Cushing forwards let up the pressure, giving way to a Middlesex counter-attack. With 7:44 remaining, the Zebras scored a security goal and finished the game with a 3-1 victory.
The Zebras will scrimmage Acton-Boxborough on Thursday, and then take time to train for the final week of the regular season.
