Zebras Fall to Brooks in OT

10/9/2012 11:19:00 AM

The Zebras traveled to familiar ISL rival Brooks today.  From the first whistle, both teams played with purpose and grit.  Much of the game was played between the two 25 yard lines; both teams seemed to have difficulty on the grass surface, resulting in broken momentum on several occasions.

Middlesex narrowly missed a score when the time elapsed in the first half.  The team was awarded four penalty corners in row and one ball ended up in the net, yet it was appropriately called back because the whistle was blown seconds before.

In the second half, Middlesex had a few fast breaks, including a heart-stopping 3-v-1, but Brooks had several more opportunities, accumulating nine penalty corners.  The Zebra defensive corner team, led by captain Clare Lyne was impenetrable and made several outstanding stops, resulting in counter-attacks for Middlesex.

As the time elapsed, the Zebras prepared for overtime.  Although the play went back and forth in the first few minutes, Brooks earned a corner and capitalized when it counted.  A Middlesex defender caught a piece of the blistering shot, but it unfortunately redirected into the air, directly to the Brooks attacker on the right post.

Senior Anna Toth played terrific defense, and rookie goalie Leah Olsen made several key saves to keep the game tied in regulation.  The Zebras were extremely disappointed with the outcome, but ready to refocus and come back to the turf against Governors on Wednesday.
