Eager to be back on their fast turf, The Zebras took the field to take on local rival Lawrence Academy.Possession switched hands several times in the first half, as both teams made spectacular defensive plays and heart-stopping drives to the cage. Mathematically, the play was extremely even with both teams earning three corners and the Zebras out-shooting Lawrence 5-4.
In the 18th minute, Maddie Winslow '14 found the back of the net off a pass from Maggie Paul '13, sparking the Middlesex momentum. Paul nearly doubled the lead with a terrific redirection, but the Lawrence goalie made a thrilling save to keep the score at 1-0.
After regrouping at the half, the Zebras came out with the same intensity, but Lawrence refused to give up. With ten minutes remaining, two Lawrence players took advantage of a Middlesex error, and slipped below the defensive line. Rookie goalie, Leah Olsen saved the game by stopping the 2 v 0. In the remaining minutes, the defensive unit made up for the earlier error with several stops, preserving the win.
Forward Maddie Miller '13 practiced disciplined back-checking,and made a spectacular defensive play in the final seconds.
The Zebras will travel to local rival Brooks on Saturday.
