Zebras Have Impressive 4-1 Victory Over Talented Governor's Squad

10/11/2012 9:14:00 AM

Middlesex and the visiting Governors stepped onto the Zebra home turf on a soggy Wednesday afternoon.  On paper, the teams were comparable, and thus the Zebras set out to not only play hard, but play with heart and passion.

In the first 15 minutes of play, both teams tirelessly stepped to the ball and played with determination and grit.  The Govs had a strong 10 minute run in the Zebras' defensive end, but the defensive team, led by anchor Juliana Fiore were relentless, and made numerous stops to prevent a Govs' score.  The defensive success sparked the Middlesex middies and forwards and the momentum began shifting in the Zebras' favor.  In the 20th minute of play, the Zebras found the back of the cage off a great assist by senior Maggie Paul.  The Govs had a few opportunities to end the half, but the score remained 1-0.

Although the Zebras came out with intensity in the second half, the Govs capitalized on a scoring opportunity and evened the score at 23:20.  However, the draw was short-lived as senior Maddie Miller scored her first goal of the season minutes later to take a 2-1 lead.  Maddie's goal elevated the Zebras once again and they continued to pepper the Govs goalie with shots.  Five minutes later, Clare Lyne added a third goal with a beautiful redirection from Paul, and Maddie Winslow closed out the scoring with a excellent touch off of Sarah Tabeek's pristine feed.

The Zebras left the field wet and tired, but completely satisfied with the team play.  The team made several connections on the field today, and the unselfish and whole-hearted effort led to a terrific Middlesex victory.
