With a record of 1-1, the MX 11 wanted a fast start on offense to build confidence and take some pressure off the defense. Fortunately, that’s just what happened.
MX received the ball first on the kick off. Andrew Matos ’13 returned it to the 37 yard line and the offense took over from there. After gaining two first downs, QB Nick Andonian ’13 took the ball around left end for a 48 yard touchdown run. The point after was no good and score stayed at 6-0.
The defense gave the ball right back to the offense on the next series as linebacker Rob Zawada ’13 intercepted a pass in the flat. The offense wasted little time in capitalizing on this opportunity as Andonian connected with halfback Hasani Figueroa ’14 on a 25 yard pass. The two point conversion was good, on a pass from Andonian to wide receiver Will Kreitler ’13, giving MX a 14-0 lead.
The offense went back to work early in the second quarter as the defense again turned the ball over, a fumble recovery by Austin May ’13. This series ended on a 17 yard touchdown pass from Andonian to wide receiver Nick Widen ’13. The kick was no good but the score was now 20-0. The rest of the first half was dominated by both the MX offense and defense as Middlesex would score three more times: a 47 yard touchdown pass from Figueroa to Kreitler, an 83 yard touchdown pass from Andonian to Widen and a touchdown by Sam Carlin ’15 on a fumbled punt snap. Brooks also broke into the scoring column in the second quarter on a 31 yard pass, ending the first half with MX holding a 40-6 lead.
Middlesex was able to play most of its roster in the second half, gaining valuable playing experience for all our players. Brooks did score three more times in the second half to bring the final score to 40-28.
Next game will be this coming Friday at home against Groton.
