The varsity field hockey team traveled to Milton, MA to square off in an ISL make-up game against the Mustangs of Milton Academy. The game was a battle from start to finish, with both teams having their chances to put the ball in the net but would ultimately end in a 0-0 draw.
The Mustangs came out of the gates ready to play and caught the Zebras off guard with their explosiveness and quick ball movement. The majority of the first half was played in Middlesex's defensive end, with truly inspired performances coming from the defensive unit of Jenna Doherty '15, Juliana Fiore '14, Anna Toth '13, Emma Fehnel '16 and sophomore goaltender Leah Olson. The Zebras had their knuckles to the ground and relentlessly pushed the ball out of the circle time and time again. Milton ended the half with a seven to one corner advantage.
The Zebras began the second half determined to make the necessary adjustments to their play. Maggie Paul '13, Clare Lyne '13, Maddie Miller '13, Maddie Winslow ' 14, Sarah Tabeek '14 and Claire Miller "15 started to generate a great passing game which provided the spark that the Middlesex team had been missing. As the time ticked away on the clock, the Zebras were relentless in the circle but the ball just didn't seem to bounce their way.
After regulation time ran out, seven Zebras took to the field ready to give their all in a 10:00 sudden victory overtime. The ball spent an equal amount of time at both ends of the field but neither team was able to put the game away. Juliana Fiore and Jenna Doherty both had huge defensive saves, while Leah Olson backstopped the team by shutting down a potential deadly breakaway. Although the team was disappointed not to come away with a win, they were able to walk off the field proud of the way they had fought and stayed together.
Middlesex will return to their home turf on Wednesday, October 3 at 3:30pm when they face a strong and talented Lawrence Academy squad.
