Middlesex has Big Come-From-Behind Win Over Thayer, 4-2

1/29/2012 4:11:00 PM

The girls’ varsity ice hockey team celebrated their 12th win of the season with a come-from-behind victory over Thayer Saturday afternoon in Concord, MA.  The Zebras fought back after a two goal deficit to defeat the Tigers 4-2 for their fifth straight victory in a row.

Thayer jumped out to an early start five minutes into the period when Melissa P. ’12 picked up a loose puck in front of the net to give the Tigers the one goal lead. As the period continued, Middlesex struggled to find the same magic they had had earlier in the week against Southfield.  The Tigers were relentless with their forecheck and kept the puck in the Zebra’s defensive end for much of the period.  With 7:58 on the clock, Thayer’s Melissa P. 12 struck again on the power play with her second goal of the game to bring the score to 2-0.

After being outplayed in many aspects in the first period, Middlesex rebounded with a great stanza in the second. Maddie ’14 opened the scoring for the Zebras at 12:49 with the feed from linemates Jordan ’12 and Cici ’14. For the next ten minutes, both teams battled to keep the puck out of their defensive zones.  With the clock ticking down, Maddie broke free with the puck at the offensive blue line and made a text book pass to Cici who found Jordan on her left for the give and go.  At 2:33 Jordan quickly found the back of the net to tie the game at 2-2.

The Zebras picked up right where they left off in the third and allowed few opportunities for Thayer to get on the board.  With 9:40 left to play, Eliza ’12 found linemate Sarah ’14 who fed the puck to Isabel ’13 in the high slot. The Thayer goaltender scrambled to get to her feet but was ultimately unable to stop Isabel’s back hand shot from reaching the top center of the net. Isabel’s goal and outstanding performance throughout the entire game proved to give Middlesex the extra momentum they needed in order to sustain the lead. With 20 seconds remaining in the game, Jordan fired the puck out of the MX defensive end into the empty net to cap off the scoring for the afternoon.

Katie ’12 finished with 23 saves for the host team.

Middlesex will look to continue their winning ways next week with three home games against Groton, Hebron and the New England Women’s Hockey League.
