Katie ’12 had another standout performance in the net for the girls’ varsity ice hockey team to help earn the 1-0 win over St. Mark's on Wednesday, January 18 in Concord, MA. She recorded an impressive 38 saves for the afternoon and was the driving force behind the Zebra’s hard fought victory.
St. Mark’s took to the ice in the first period ready to play. The puck spent the majority of the time in Middlesex’s defensive end, as the Lion’s defense continued to prevent our forwards from breaking out of the zone. The Zebras did not get discouraged however and remained positive and determined to make the necessary adjustments to turn the momentum of the game.
The second period saw more action at the offensive end of the ice for Middlesex. And each shift the Zebras continued to make small improvements to their game. 5:30 into the period, Jordan ‘12 scored her 16
th goal of the season when she received a pass from line mates Cici ’14 and Maddie ’14 and fired a shot over the right shoulder of the Lion’s goaltender. For the remaining 9:30 in the period, both Middlesex and St. Mark’s had opportunities to score but their defensive units held strong. The forward line of Eliza ’12, Maddie ’13 and Sarah ’14 played smart and poised to help give Middlesex the confidence they would need to start the third period.
With 15:00 left to play in the game, the Zebras fought hard to maintain the one goal lead. Leah ’15, Jeanie ’13, Ashley ’13 and Brooke ’14 protected the Middlesex net and kept the puck out of our defensive end. Eleanor ’13, Eliza and Sarah covered the Lion’s defensemen on the blue line with a sense of urgency and purpose to prevent them from getting anymore shots on net. With 1:29 left on the clock, Katie ’12 wowed the crowd with an acrobatic kick save that gave her teammates the drive they needed to secure the win.
Middlesex returns to their home ice on Friday, January 20 when they face Cushing Academy at 4:30pm before semester break begins.
