Briana Mastel joined the Middlesex community in 2021 after serving as a coach for the East Coast Wizards Junior Girls’ program. A Wallingford, CT native, Briana graduated from Choate Rosemary Hall in 2013 where she excelled as a tri-varsity student-athlete in soccer, ice hockey, and lacrosse. In 2012, she won a silver medal with the U.S. U-18 Women’s National Ice Hockey Team at the World Championships in the Czech Republic. Briana served as captain of the varsity soccer, ice hockey, and lacrosse teams in her senior year, and was awarded the Charles Wickliffe Kennerly Memorial Award, given to the athlete who exemplifies generous nature, fair play and who has positively influenced others. She was also presented with the School Seal prize, the highest honor for contribution to her school.
Briana continued her ice hockey career at Harvard University while earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology and Spanish. During her time at Harvard, she helped her team win a Beanpot championship, ECAC championship, 2 Ivy-League championships, and land a spot in the NCAA championship game. She was named to the ECAC All-Rookie Team, Second Team All-Ivy, and served as captain in her senior season.
In the classroom, Mastel was a four-time member of the ECAC all-academic team and finalist for the Mandi Schwartz Student-Athlete of the Year. She also served as a member of the Harvard Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Her teammates voted her the Dooley Award Recipient— presented to the player who best combines the qualities of sportsmanship, enthusiasm, and devotion to the team and to the game of ice hockey.
After finishing up her collegiate career, Briana signed a professional contract with the Boston Pride of the National Women’s Hockey League (NWHL) and is a member of the 2021 Isobel Cup championship team. She has served as a private skills instructor for players at the youth, high school, and collegiate levels, and has coached and served as a team leader at the USA Hockey National Player Development camps. Briana is a member of the Positive Coaching Alliance whose mission is to cultivate positive sports culture along with character development, life skills, and using sports to teach life lessons.
