CONCORD, Mass. - In a game that had league tournament implications, visiting BB&N rallied for a 10-9 decision over Middlesex, spoiling senior day for the host Zebras on Saturday afternoon.
The Zebras did come out blazing against the Knights, setting the tone early with relentless energy and disciplined defense. Sparked by the efforts of Sarah Voute (Harvard, Mass.), Sarah Smith (Acton, Mass.), Avery Swenson (Concord, Mass.), and Lucy McGaraghan (Lexington, Mass.), the Zebras forced numerous turnovers and kept the Knights on their heels from the opening draw.
Offensively, Middlesex showed a balanced and confident attack in the first quarter. Cate Glass (Brookline, Mass.), Ryan Pinney (Carlisle, Mass.), and Addie Curry (Carlisle, Mass.) each found the back of the net with well-executed goals, giving the Zebras a 3–2 lead at the end of the first.
The pressure didn't let up in the second, as the Zebras continued to pepper the BB&N goalie with shots, and excellent ball movement paid off. Pinney and Marin Gustafson (Wellesley, Mass.) connected with Annika McNulty (Houston, Texas) and Curry for strong finishes inside, while Glass and Curry each added another goal to extend the lead and give Middlesex firm control heading into halftime.
BBN began to rally in the third quarter, capitalizing on opportunities and tightening the score. Still, Bella Santucci (Leominster, Mass.) and Pinney answered when needed to keep the Zebras in front as the game grew more intense.
In the fourth, the Knights used powerful drives from up top to break through and eventually scored the go-ahead goal with 2:42 remaining. The Zebras created a few late chances to equalize, but the tying goal proved elusive.
Despite the tough one-goal loss, Middlesex delivered a strong performance against a highly ranked opponent. The team took pride in its cohesive play, especially in midfield transition, and in the many bright moments that showed what this group can do when playing together as a unit.
