CONCORD, Mass. - Star hurler
Andrew Reid (Lowell, Mass.) delivered a masterful performance on the mound and host Middlesex opened up its 2026 season with a 4-0 win over Independent School League (ISL) rival Governor's Academy on Saturday afternoon.
Reid struck out 11 and allowed just two hits over six innings of work on just 90 pitches - 65 of them strikes. He retired the first 12 batters he faced, including striking out the side in the third.
The Zebras got on the board in the second inning when Milo Conlin (Lexington, Mass.) worked a leadoff walk and then went to second on a
Connor O'Malley (Lancaster, Mass.) sacrifice bunt. Conlin moved to third on an
Oliver Gates (Brookline, Mass.) groundout and then scored on a fielding error by Governor's.
Middlesex tacked on two more runs in the third after EJ McAuliffe (East Hampton, N.Y.) drew a leadoff walk and then a
Paul Chamberland (Stow, Mass.) double put runners on second and third.
Jack West (Littleton, Mass.) brought them both home with a single to left.
The Zebras' final score came in the fourth when O'Malley led off the bottom of the fourth with a single then stole second. He was still on second with two outs but Colt Bagnulo (Hanover, N.H.) drove him home with a single to right, making the score 4-0.
Reid, meanwhile, continued to cruise. After giving up his first hit - a single to begin the fifth - he promptly retired the next five batters via the strikeout and seven consecutive batters overall. He found himself with two outs in the sixth when he gave up a walk and a single before getting out of trouble when he got Governor's number three hitter to foul out harmlessly to McAuliffe behind third base.
Chamberland closed out the contest in the seventh with a pair of strikeouts, including one to end the game. In addition to his save, Chamberland went 2-for-3 with a run scored and Bagnulo added a 1-for-3 afternoon with an RBI and a stolen base.
Middlesex is back in action on Wednesday when they host Roxbury Latin. First pitch is slated for 4:00 PM.
