BOSTON, Mass. - On a Friday night in Boston, the Middlesex Zebras delivered yet another comeback performance, showing resilience and grit in a dramatic 11-10 overtime win.
The Zebras got off to a slow start, still shaking out their bus legs as Winsor dominated early. Winsor controlled the draw and capitalized on offensive execution, jumping out to a lead in the first quarter.
Middlesex began to settle in late in the quarter and as they started winning draws, the offense found its rhythm. Taylor Thompson (Wellesley, Mass.) and
Thea Salem (Cambridge, Mass.) each found the back of the net, and
Addie Curry (Carlisle, Mass.) connected with
Ryan Pinney (Harvard, Mass.) for another tally to cut the deficit to 5–3 by the end of the quarter.
The second quarter saw a shift in momentum. The Zebras' defense tightened up while the offense moved the ball with greater patience and purpose. Both teams traded goals for much of the period, but Middlesex seized the moment in the final minute of the half. After winning back-to-back draws, Cate Glass (Brookline, Mass.) and Curry with help from
Marin Gustafson (Wellesley, Mass.) scored in quick succession, sending the Zebras into halftime with renewed energy and within striking distance.
The third quarter proved challenging, as Middlesex surrendered two goals and struggled with decision-making on the offensive end. Despite the setback, the Zebras entered the fourth quarter determined to reclaim control of the game.
The fourth quarter belonged to Middlesex. The defense shut down Winsor's attack, the draw unit took command, and the offense delivered when it mattered most. Pinney, Thompson, and Curry each scored clutch goals to even the score at 10–10.
Winsor won the final draw of regulation and earned a free position shot with just six seconds remaining, but goalie Erin Larson (North Andover, Mass.) came up with a clutch save to preserve the tie and send the game into overtime.
In the extra period, Glass opened with a draw control and drove hard before dishing to Bella Santucci (Leominster, Mass.), who quickly found Pinney. Pinney buried the shot to seal the thrilling comeback victory for the Zebras.
Sarah Voute (Harvard, Mass.),
Emma Voute (Harvard, Mass.),
Avery Swenson (Concord, Mass.),
Lucy McGaraghan (Lexington, Mass.), and
Sarah Smith held down the fort in the defensive end.Â
Middlesex still has work to do as the ISL season approaches, but the team continues to grow and adjust. They will look to build on this momentum next week when they face Milton Academy.
