GROTON, Mass. - Visiting Middlesex scored early and often and got a standout performance in goal en route to a 15-2 win over Lawrence Academy in ISL girls lacrosse action on Monday afternoon. The win for the Zebras was the 200th career lacrosse victory for head coach
Natalie Martinez.
Draw specialists
Cate Glass (Brookline, Mass.),
Marin Gustafson (Wellesley, Mass.), and
Bella Santucci (Leominster, Mass.) set the tone early, consistently winning possession and giving the Zebras immediate offensive opportunities. Just 42 seconds into the game,
Addie Curry (Carlisle, Mass.) struck first to put Middlesex on the board and spark what would become a scoring spree, as the Zebras poured in goals and never looked back.
In the second quarter, Middlesex continued to dictate the pace on both ends of the field. Freshman
Presley Bruno (Andover, Mass.) made an impressive debut, recording her first career caused turnover with a clutch interception inside the 8-meter arc. Bruno then transitioned the ball to the offense with composure and she nabbed her second caused turnover on the day later in the game and her defensive communication was the best on the team.Â
Olivia Crawford (Stow, Mass.) added to the momentum with her first career goal with 3:17 left in the first quarter on a great one-on-one drive. Crawford also picked up a caused turnover on a terrific ride.
Freshman
Maisie Martinez (Concord, Mass.) was everywhere — leading the team in contested ground balls, earning a caused turnover, and tallying two goals (including her first career goal) along with an assist.Â
Fellow freshmen
Rory Gurtler (Wellesley, Mass.) and
Emma Voute (Harvard, Mass.) were stalwarts in the defensive end before transitioning to midfield, where each scored her first career goal. Gurtler's tally came early in the second quarter, while Voute capped the day's scoring on a fast break set up by Martinez.Â
Defensively,
Tessa Rusconi (Concord, Mass.) and
Burke Hastings (Wellesley, Mass.) made several impressive slides to shut down Lawrence Academy's attack, while
Molly Kearney (Lexington, Mass.) and
Libby Melly (Reading, Mass.) provided additional firepower on offense.Â
Lucy McGaraghan (Lexington, Mass.) added much to both ends of the field and scored her first two goals of the season. Defenders
Avery Swenson (Concord, Mass.) and
Sarah Smith (Acton, Mass.) also earned their first Middlesex career goals, Smith on a free position and Swenson getting a feed from Smith three minutes later to close out the scoring in the first half.  Â
In goal,
Olivia Lynch (East Greenwich, R.I.) was outstanding as both a player and leader, communicating effectively and turning away seven shots and allowing just two goals in a commanding team performance that showcased Middlesex's depth, energy, and balance across the field.
Middlesex is back in action on Wednesday with a 2:45 PM start at The Governor's Academy.
