CONCORD, Mass. - In a clash steeped in rivalry, Middlesex squared off against Thayer, a program loaded with depth and talent and the Zebras battled hard before dropping a 17-8 decision to their ISL rivals. From the opening whistle, however, it was clear this would be a battle of grit versus firepower, and the Zebras came ready to compete.
Thayer struck quickly, finding the back of the net in the first minute. But Middlesex wasted no time responding.
Addie Curry (Carlisle, Mass.) answered with a composed finish to level the score, settling the Zebras into the game.Â
Moments later,
Thea Salem (Cambridge, Mass.) capitalized on a sharp feed from
Ryan Pinney (Harvard, Mass.) to give Middlesex a 2–1 edge and ignite the sideline. Thayer, however, showed why they are considered a powerhouse, tacking on two late goals to close the quarter with a narrow 3–2 lead.
The Tigers turned up the intensity in the second quarter. While the Zebras continued to battle, getting key goals from Pinney and
Annika McNulty (Houston, Texas), Thayer found another gear and strung together a run of unanswered scores. Even as the scoreboard tilted, the young Middlesex defense refused to back down, making Thayer work for every possession with tough, physical play.
The third quarter brought more balance, with both teams trading opportunities, but the Zebras couldn't quite close the gap. Still, the effort never wavered. In the fourth quarter,
Cate Glass (Wellesley, Mass.) and
Bella Santucci (Leominster, Mass.) added to the Middlesex tally, showcasing the team's determination to fight through the final whistle.
Defensively,
Avery Swenson (Concord, Mass.) stood out with a gritty performance, leading the team in caused turnovers and ground balls. Santucci and Glass were instrumental on the draw, combining for several key controls, while
Marin Gustafson (Wellesley, Mass.) made impactful plays on both ends of the field.Â
Defender
Sarah Smith (Acton, Mass.) earned her first career point with an assist to McNulty after breaking up a play in the midfield and freshman
Rory Gurtler (Wellesley, Mass.) stepped into the defense, making an impact for the Zebras.
Erin Larson (North Andover, Mass.) had 13 saves in the net and seven different players added to the 8 goal tally.
Though the final result favored Thayer, the Zebras proved that heart, hustle, and teamwork can challenge even the most formidable opponent. In a rivalry game that lived up to its history, Middlesex showed resilience and pride that will carry forward into the rest of the season.
