Southboro, Mass. - Visiting Middlesex extended its season-opening unbeaten streak to five games with a hard-fought 1-1 tie with ISL rival Saint Mark's on Saturday afternoon. The Zebras (3-0-2) dominated the stat sheet in the contest and had several excellent scoring opportunities that went awry.
A stout Lion defense, anchored by their goalkeeper,
Rohan Puncharam, kept MX at bay, as he turned aside 16 shots as the Middlesex offensive attack sent wave after wave into the offensive zone.
Saint Mark's actually took a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute when Hugo Owens converted a penalty kick, even though MX netminder
Noah Browne was able to get a hand on it.
Several MX student-athletes came close to scoring at different points in the match, including
Adriano Valmora (crossbar),
Bryan Mahew (crossbar)
Baze Kalisa (post) and
Will McCarthy (crossbar).
Middlesex netted the equalizer in the second half when
Matt Oh deposited a low rocket in the the right corner of the goal with help from McCarthy.
Overall, MX held advantages in shots (17-1) and corner kicks (10-0).
The week ahead is huge for Middlesex with two home contests in a three day span. They host Tabor Academy on Thursday at 3:30 PM before welcoming in Milton Academy on Saturday night under the lights for a 6:00 PM start.
