The Middlesex wrestling team traveled to Bath, Maine on a snowy Saturday for the Northern New England Invitational Tournament, a key late-season showcase that featured Class A powerhouses Phillips Andover and Phillips Exeter, as well as ISL rivals Milton Academy, BB&N and Belmont Hill. After a tough day of wrestling, the Zebras came away with five place winners and lots of great tournament experience to build upon as the team looks towards the end-of-season championships.
Junior co-captain Harper Edwards cruised to the championship at 165 lbs, defeating his opponent from Belmont Hill by technical superiority 20-2 in the semifinals and earning the fall in his championship match in under a minute. Junior Caleb Mitchell was similarly dominant at 175 lbs, pinning his opponent from Eagle Hill in 46 seconds in the 3rd place match and earning a total of three pinfalls on the day.
Junior Katherine Deng impressed at 113 lbs, earning a dominant win by fall in 25 seconds over KJ Johnson from Eagle Hill in the consolation semifinals; after jumping out to a 7 point lead in the 3rd place match, she wrestled tough but could not hold off her opponent, and ended up taking home the 4th place medal.
Freshman Jerry Cao compiled an impressive 4-2 record at 126 lbs, earning 5th place with a win by technical superiority 19-3 over Armand Matijasevic of Milton Academy. Cao had two additional tech falls and a win by pinfall on the day, outclassing his opponents from the neutral position in almost every contest. Freshman Edgar Choi, competing at 157 lbs opened the tournament in emphatic fashion, dominating second-seeded Matt Walsh from BB&N from whistle to whistle and securing a second period pin. He also won by fall over two different opponents from Belmont Hill, finishing 3-3 on the day and earning 6th place.
Senior co-captain Marcus Douge won two matches in impressive fashion, and senior co-captain Fiona Fittante also scored a crowd-pleasing win by fall in the first consolation round. Freshmen Julian Barber and Jacob Li, sophomore Morgan Kim, and senior Kimberly Guzman Flores also competed for the Zebras.
Middlesex will head to St. Sebastian's this coming Saturday for the Graves Kelsey Tournament, where the ISL title will be decided.
