Momentum Picking Up For Girls Varsity Soccer

11/3/2025 9:00:00 AM

CONCORD, Mass. - After a slow start to the 2025 campaign, the Middlesex varsity girls soccer team has found its footing as of late, carrying some momentum down the stretch of the season.

The Zebras are 1-1-2 in their last four games and unbeaten in their last three.

After a hard-fought 1-0 loss on the road at Rivers (October 22), Middlesex then fell behind 2-0 in the opening moments to Thayer (October 25) on Family Weekend.

Momentum started to shift late in the first half of that contest and they got on the board after a corner kick produced a scrum out in front of the net that Gussie Willis (Cambridge, Mass.) pounced on to slice the lead in half with less than five minutes to go in the first frame.

Then with less than ten minutes remaining, the Zebras got the equalizer when Willis set up Sophie Getchell (Littleton, Mass.), who floated a ball over the outstretched arms of the Tigers' netminder for a thrilling 2-2 finish.

Riding high off the Thayer comeback, Middlesex stepped out of conference for a matchup with Phillips Exeter (October 29) and the game was scoreless deep into the second half when Willis was at it again, this time heading home a corner kick for the game's lone goal and the team's first win of the season.

Things looked bleak in the ensuing contest at home against Pingree (October 31) but a throw-in from the right side by Rebecca Fusco (Littleton, Mass.) found Willis, whose header sailed over the leaping Highlander goalkeeper for the game-tying goal and the eventual tie.

Two games remain on the MX schedule beginning with Wednesday's road trip to BB&N before finishing up at home against Saint George's.
