WRENTHAM, Mass. - It turned out to be a banner day all around as the Middlesex girls cross country team cemented their status as one of New England's elite programs behind an incredibly impressive team performance to lay claim to their second straight Independent School League (ISL) championship on Friday afternoon.
The Zebras have now won four of the last five league titles dating back to the 2021 season.
Today's showing on a gray and windy day was highlighted by the exploits of Stella Curwin-Amfitheatrof (Bridgewater, Conn.) who won her second straight ISL individual crown by blazing through the course in 18:59.98. Curwin-Amfitheatrof got off to an excellent start and then broke away from a pack early on and was never truly threatened en route to victory.
But it wasn't just Curwin-Amfitheatrof who shined. Freshman sensation Jude Hebb (Princeton, Mass.) carved out a season-best time of 19:25.67 to finish in fifth place. Hebb was followed by senior
Cassidy Bruno (Andover, Mass.) who recorded her fourth straight top ten finish at the league championship by coming in seventh (19:41.70).
Meanwhile, Anika Ata (Carlisle, Mass.) posted a career-best time of 20:21.23 to earn a top 15 finish.
Kate Tantillo (Concord, Mass.) and
Cate Corbett (Harvard, Mass.) both posted season-best times to finish in 24th and 27th place, respectively.
Angela Huffer (Juneau, Alaska) rounded out the varsity runners for Middlesex with a time of 21:35.58.
The junior varsity squad also won the ISL championship with three runners finishing in the top four.
Pipsa Palatsi (Oulu, Finland) recorded a second place finish with a season-best time of 21:38.16, while
Caroline Stilwell (Winchester, Mass.) was third in 21:39.24 - the best time of her career.
Scarlett Gustafson (Winchester, Mass.) also had a career-best showing with a time of 22:10.61, good for fourth place, while both
Marvelous Ugwu (Hyde Park, Mass.) in 22:40.09 - also a personal best and
Allison Luo (Westford, Mass.) in 22:57.55 added top ten finishers for the Zebras, in eighth and ninth places, respectively.
The senior class can boast of a bevy of accolades during their time at MX, including three league titles (2022, 2024, 2025), two New England championships (2023, 2024), two undefeated regular seasons and earlier this month they recorded their 50th career victory.
The final race comes next week when they look to win their third straight New England Championship on Saturday, November 8 at Williston-Northampton.
