Boys' Varsity Soccer Battles Dexter Southfield to 2-0 Victory

9/19/2024 7:56:00 AM

Middlesex played the last of four non-league matches in the buildup to the ISL opener, as they hosted Dexter-Southfield for a Wednesday afternoon Class B NEPSAC match.  The first half saw a good deal of possession enjoyed by the home team, but no final touch to open the scoring.  Middlesex hit a few posts and missed a penalty kick in the first half, but the score was knotted at 0-0 at the interval.  In the second half, there was a renewed energy for Middlesex, and they grew into the game by creating chances where they got behind the stalwart Dexter back line.  The deadlock was broken in the 65th minute as co-captain Olly Mylon '25 beat two men along the left byline and picked out Bryan Mayhew in the second six for a thunderous finish into the top corner.  Adriano Valmora '28 put the game out of reach just four minutes later, as he was quick to play a flick from Will McCarthy '28 over the outstretched hands of the Dexter keeper for a 2-0 advantage.  Keeper Noah Browne made a crucial diving save in the later phases of the match to preserve the clean sheet for the Zebras.  With the non-league slate out of the way, it is time to open the ISL season on Saturday as Middlesex hosts St. Mark's on Saturday.
