Despite a strong start to the contest, Middlesex Girls' Varsity Soccer dropped its home opener against a resilient Pomfret squad on a beautiful Saturday in Concord. The match started well for Middlesex: Strong midfield play by Avery Green '26 and Maya Lloyd '25 resulted in attacking transition for Stella Mourtzinos '26, who sped past Pomfret's right back and set Sophie Getchell '27 up for a wonderfully orchestrated opening tally. Although Middlesex dominated possession throughout the first half, a defensive error allowed Pomfret to equalize as time ticked off the clock. While players on both sides deserve praise for their efforts in the second half, Pomfret's goalkeeper stood out as the player of the match. Of her many saves, a diving effort that stopped a Julia Blum '25 free kick may prove to be her save of the year. Although Pomfret continued to capitalize on mistakes, Middlesex never relented. Impressive individual goals by Ashwini Menon '25 and Avery Green '26 nearly brought the score to a draw, but Pomfret held on for an impressive win. Final: 3-4 Pomfret. MXGVS is back in action on Wednesday, September 18th, at Phillips Andover.
