Middlesex traveled the distance to Tabor for their third game on the road this week. Coming off an emotional loss to Govs and the third and final surgery of their beloved senior teammate, the Zebras knew they needed to dig deep and fight. In the first quarter, the defensive unit was outstanding- breaking up plays, forcing bad shots, and making saves. Fueled by this excellent defensive play, the offense made good attempts, converting one into a goal by Cate Glass. The second quarter continued to go back and forth with the Seawolves holding much of the possession, but the determined defensive unit held strong, turning away shots for the first 6 minutes of play. Tabor notched their first two tallies of the game within 90 seconds of play, taking their first lead on the day 2-1 with 5 minutes remaining in the half, but Ellie Bracken evened it again three minutes later. Tabor grabbed their final goal of the half to take the lead 3-2 going into the second half. Ellie Bracken and Katie Athanasoulas notched two more in the next 5 minutes to again take a 4-3 lead, but Tabor took the lead again in the remaining minutes of the third. Going into the fourth quarter down 5-4, the Zebras dug in their heels and came out on a mission. Despite their difficulty winning against a terrific Tabor draw specialist, The Zebras turned away many Tabor offensive pushes with smart defensive play. Ryan Pinney evened the score, but Tabor came back a minute later on a disrupted clear, making the score 6-5. That, however, would be the Seawolves final goal of the day. With tremendous poise at both ends of the field, the Zebras broke down several Tabor offensive shots thanks to the valiant play of Lily McTeague in goal (9 saves on the day) and Tate McMurray who was hit by a rocket shot in the third quarter. While a goal from Addie Curry was taken back, the team stayed strong and Bracken evened the score for her teammate with 4:31 remaining. The defense made huge plays in the next minutes and Sophie Watson came up big with a caused turnover on a clear that seemed to ignite the entire team. With 2 minutes left, the defense again made a huge play and worked the ball to ninth grader Lucy McGaraghan who transitioned the ball well under the pressure. The Zebras, led by the seniors in the offense, stayed calm and waited to attack until the final 30 seconds of play. Glass got on the free position line and instead of shooting, she found the stick of Ryan Pinney who scored the winning goal. While Tabor won the draw, the defense made yet another impressive play and got the ball to goalie Lily McTeague who held the ball for the win, even when aggressively fouled.Â
