Middlesex hosted Groton on the Concord River on a perfect day for racing. Wind and current were virtually nonexistent, and the water was flat. Four Middlesex boats raced for the first time this season and put forth solid races; though Groton bested the home crews in the first three contests, Middlesex earned a win in the 1V.Â
The race was tight from start to finish. Middlesex got off the line strong and maintained their pace, battling with Groton in the first 500 meters. At the midway, Middlesex began slowly inching on Groton, widening the lead with every stroke until they were up a length heading into the final stretch. Just when it looked like Middlesex was ready to put open water between them, Groton made a move, and the two crews sprinted to the finish line. Despite a late surge from Groton, Middlesex was able to fend them off and finish nearly 3 seconds ahead.Â
