MX traveled to Berkshire School this weekend for the Class C New England Championships. In the first round Saturday morning, MX faced off against Dexter School and the team prevailed at every position. Of particular note was Ema Edwards's ('24) five-game triumph over the Dexter #4, as Ema saved three match balls in the fourth game, then went on to triumph in the fifth game by neutralizing her opponent's power, covering the whole court, and hitting her shots with effective variety.
In the semifinals on Saturday afternoon, Middlesex played Dana Hall, a rematch of an earlier season contest, which MX had won in a squeaker 4-3. This time the victory was more decisive, as MX prevailed 5-2, with Arya Mehta ('24) at #2 reversing an earlier season 3-0 loss by winning in five games, coming from 7-3 down in both the fourth and fifth games to win in clutch fashion.
Finally Sunday morning, in the finals, MX prevailed over a Berkshire team that is very strong at the top. At #5 Claire Ryu ('27), at #6 Ashwini Menon ('25), and at #7 Mia Nolin ('25) all won 3-0. Thus, it was up to the top four to break through Berkshire's strength in at least one place: Arya at #2, playing her best squash of the season, upset the Berkshire #2 3-0, using crosscourts and boasts to move her opponent, while using straight drives to keep her guessing. At #4, Ema lost the first game 13-11, but came back to take the next three by attacking her opponent's left side; Ema won the second game 11-3 and never looked back. At #1 Anjali Mehta ('27) played a heroic match against a very athletic and highly ranked opponent, and with a large crowd watching the incredible shotmaking by both players, the match reached 9 all in the fifth. Though her opponent came up with two spectacular winners in a row to prevail, 11-9 in the fifth, Anjali played inspired squash throughout the match, her best of the season. Overall, MX beat Berkshire 5-2 to win the Division Championship!
Everyone on the team played their best squash of the season this weekend. The team overall won 20 individual matches and lost only 4. Undefeated on the weekend were Arya Mehta, Claire Ryu, Ashwini Menon, Mia Nolin, and Kiki Friedbauer ('24).
Coming up this week, MX faces Exeter and Tabor, with the High School National Championships in a week and a half.
