Boys' Varsity Soccer Nets 2 in Draw at St. George's

11/9/2024 5:19:00 PM

Middlesex traveled to St. George's for the last regular season match of the 2024 ISL season and there was an air of expectancy around the matchup, as both teams had played their way into contention for a New England post-season bid.  Middlesex chose to sit back for the opening 25 minutes and allow St. George's the lion's share of the ball.  This led to a ball played into the Middlesex box and after a missed chance to clear the ball, Antonio Mattera poked the loose ball to Cristian Ayala for a close range finish.  That goal held up until halftime, though Middlesex took control to create numerous scoring chances in the final 15 minutes of the half.  With the feeling that the momentum had shifted, Nico Alberga spun a Middlesex defender at the top of the box and hit an instinctive shot that went in off the post for a 2-0 lead.  Middlesex felt that this was against the run of play and continued to press to find the opening goal.  That happened just four minutes later, as Baze Kalisa pressed on to strip the left back and proceeded to walk in alone on the St. George's keeper and buried his chance to cut the lead in half.  Then, in the 65th minute, it was Kalisa in transition again, but this time he picked out Adriano Valmora with a teasing ball just behind the last retreating defender.  Valmora shifted the ball across his body to lose the last defender and slot it home to tie the match at 2-2.  Middlesex continued to press on for the winner, but the St. George's backline held firm.  It was a fast-paced and highly competitive match that showcased some of the best teams in Class B New England.  For St. George's, Alberga '26, Spentzos '25, and Ayala '27 stood out, while Olly Mylon '25, Bryan Mayhew '26, and Quinn Falvey '26 had excellent performances.  The result brings the Middlesex boys to a 12-4-3 record (.711) for the season and hopes of more training sessions on Monday and Tuesday in preparation for the New England Quarterfinals on Wednesday.
