Roxbury Latin kept battling back and showed grit and determination in a 3-3 draw at Middlesex. The first 20 minutes saw Middlesex cruise to a two-goal lead, courtesy of a Bryan Mayhew penalty kick and Danny Cai sealing off his defender and finishing over an onrushing keeper from a deft feed from Mayhew. In the 25th minute, Luca Bene surged forward and attempted a low shot from distance that the opportunistic Christo Velikin intercepted and pounced on to finish and cut the deficit in half. Then, in first half stoppage time, Roxbury Latin was awarded a penalty kick that Velikin rolled in to the side net to level the score at 2-2 going into halftime. Within the first two minutes of the restart, Mayhew served a wide free kick into the area and the clearance was collected by Jeffrey Hernandez who fired a low ball to the top of the six where Danny Cai took a clean first touch and turned to rifle the ball into the roof of the net to take the lead again for Middlesex at 3-2. In the 58th minute, some fantastic individual running from Alex Giordano on the right flank brought him into the area to play a ball to the weak side for an unpressured finish from his brother Andrew. The rest of the match was back and forth with some great chances for both sides and some excellent saves from both van den Bosch and Browne in the net. Velikin was denied a chance at a hat trick when an early whistle stopped a potential threat on goal and Danny Cai was denied a hat trick by a disallowed chance for offside. While both sides can rue the nearly missed chances and moments that looked promising- in the end, a share of the points was a fair result. It was an intense and highly competitive match that provided great entertainment for the fans. Both sides represented their schools with pride and great sportsmanship. Â
