Girl's Varsity Soccer Tops Tabor 2-1

9/29/2023 12:14:00 PM

With a win at St. Mark's on Saturday, Middlesex Girls' Soccer was hoping to continue their winning ISL ways when Tabor came to Concord this week. Always a tough opponent for the Zebras, Tabor came ready to play, and it took some time for the Zebras to gain their footing in the first half. Reaching the midpoint of the first half in a back and forth game, Julia Blum '25 earned a free kick just outside of the box in the middle of the field, and Blum deposited the ensuing kick into the back of the net to put the Zebras up, 1-0. The lone goal stood as the halftime whistle blew.

Tabor came out with a sense of urgency to their play, and they knotted the game 10 minutes into the second stanza. Tabor kept up sustained pressure in the latter stages of the game, but the Middlesex defense held strong. With just over six minutes to play, Maya Lloyd '25 played the ball onto Blake Dewing '25, who found Ashwini Menon '25 all alone in front of the net, and cleverly buried it on the near post to retake the lead. Tabor gave one last gasp, but were denied by the stellar play of GK Ella Labib '24 and a defensive line of tri-captain Piper Morris '24, Gussie Willis '27, Stella Mourtzinos '26, and Lila Glazier '25. Final score: Middlesex 2, Tabor 1. A quality win over a quality opponent.

MXGVS will look to keep the winning streak intact as it takes on Milton Academy in a much anticipated "Under the Lights" game Saturday evening. Kickoff is at 6pm.
