Girls' Lacrosse Tops Groton 15-11

5/7/2023 10:20:00 PM

The MX Zebras traveled down the road to meet up with ISL rival Groton on one of the first beautiful days of the spring. Both teams came out fired up despite being in the midst of AP Exams. Groton notched the first tally on the day, but Middlesex adjusted defensively and answered in the attacking end. The two Zebra teams traded goals, landing at a 3-3 draw at the 15 minute mark. While Groton took a 4-3 lead shortly after, that would be their last lead of the game as the Middlesex defense stiffened and attacking unit came alive. Middlesex scored 6 goals to Groton's 1 in the last ten minutes of the half, giving the MX Zebras a 9-5 lead at the half. In the second half, Groton took the ball straight to net to bring the game to 9-6, but Middlesex answered.  Groton brought the score to 11-9, but 6 Middlesex players combined for 4 goals to maintain the four goal lead and eventual 15-11 win. The defensive unit was excellent led by goalie Syd Cogliano with 13 saves and Tate McMurray and Siena Berardinelli earned the most CTOs, and contested GBs, respectively. Molly Nye was relentless in the defense along with Katie Athanasoulas, Avery Taylor, and Sophie Watson. Six players earned goals including Finn Crosby, Ali Petrone, Marg Matz, Caroline Cervini, Berardinelli, Esme Coes, and Charley DiAdamo finished the day with three assists. The contributions from all seven attackers demonstrated the selfless play and pure teamwork.  The draw team dug in and won it when it mattered giving the team energy and power to perform.
