Girls' Varsity Lacrosse Tops Andover, 8-4

4/7/2023 8:09:00 AM

The Zebras traveled to Class A rival Phillips Andover on a cold New England spring afternoon. The Middlesex-Andover matchup is always a competitive one so the team was locked in and focused to take control from the beginning. The game was a typical early season match with a lot of turnovers by both teams in the first half leading to back-and-forth play. Andover notched the first three goals on a drive and two hard feeds taking the 3-0 lead 8 minutes into the game. The fierce Middlesex defense tightened up and read the Andover offense, creating many turnovers and leaving Andover scoreless for the next twelve minutes of the half. The defensive work ignited the offense as they slowly chipped away, evening the score on excellent offensive plays by Finley Crosby, Esme Coes, and Ali Petrone. While Andover again took the lead with 5:14 remaining in the half, Middlesex answered with just 7 seconds remaining to head into the second half of play 4-4. The second half was a defensive battle and the score remained 4-4 for nearly 16 minutes of play. With 8:30 remaining, however, Caroline Cervini gave Middlesex their first lead of the game. From that point on, The Zebras were relentless at both ends with goalie Sydney Cogliano leading the unit with key saves the offensive creating great goal-scoring opportunities. The Zebras notched three more goals, finishing with a beautiful goal by Margeaux Matz in the remaining minutes of play. The draw team was relentless today and Avery Taylor cleaned up ground balls in the defensive end. Overall, a game of grit and spirit by the mighty Zebras. "The team played so well, they don't have to go to school tomorrow," announced Natalie Martinez. The Zebs will hit the road again to take on another Class A team, Deerfield, this Saturday.
