The 2023-24 Huckins-Rouse Invitational was a particularly competitive event with every participant winning at least one game. Groton was named tournament champion as the only team going a perfect 3-0.
Host Middlesex bounced back after a tough Friday afternoon loss to Portsmouth Abbey by winning consecutive games against two very competitive programs in Hopkins (Connecticut) and Holderness (New Hampshire). Against Hopkins, Middlesex started out fast, playing with great energy en route to a 32-23 halftime lead. What was especially impressive was the way the team shared the basketball assisting on 17 of 23 field goals made in the game. Offensively, Xavier Hazard led the way with 27pts and 5 steals, followed by Nick Teller scoring 17pts and 3 assists with Gavin DeLuties chipping in 12pts on 3-6 3pt field goals.
On Saturday the Zebras took on a very talented Holderness team who started the tournament winning their first two games. From the tip, Middlesex came ready to play. Even so, Holderness started the game on an 18-8 run led by 6'8 center Ian Plankley and 6'5 wing Andre Langley. After a timeout, the boys turned it up to another level on the defensive end of the court. In the final 21 minutes of the contest, Middlesex outscored Holderness 33-18, holding this very talented team to 8 total points in the second half. Aidan O'Sullivan and Ty Fein were particularly formidable while competing against two very talented players. Aidan led the team with 9 rebounds while Ty held Plankley to just two points after the first 10 minutes of the game. It was a true team win exemplified toughness and selflessness.
