Boys' Cross Country Races Roxbury Latin and Belmont Hill

9/27/2022 11:43:00 AM

On what was a great day to run, the boys team found themselves with tough competition early in the season as we were racing against the largest two schools in our league, two consistently strong programs in Roxbury Latin and Belmont Hill. We still knew that we had the ability to beat each of these schools if we ran our best race as the boys had been preparing all summer for such an event. The JV race went off first with Ben Luo leading the race for a decent stretch but found he started it too fast and finished 7th with a 21:04 with Owen Barry finishing 5th with a 20:47. Tim Cassidy (21:05), Raymond Li (21:26), and Anton Belyuk (22:13) rounded out the scoring five with great races themselves. Captain Antonio Ometeiotl (22:16) and Luke Zhang (22:31) also finished close behind. Freshman Vincent Gilbert had a notable finish as he cut several minutes off his time from the week before finishing at 24:43.

The varsity team had a great race with captain Matt Wing racing with great strategy, running second for the first two miles on the shoulder of a Roxbury Latin runner on his home course then running an incredibly fast last mile to win the race by 41 seconds in a time of 17:03. Vedant Deokar (18:30), Luke Taylor (19:07), Henry Horvath (18:08), and Nick Constatino (19:14) all had their best times of the season as well, rounding out an excellent top five. Captain Peter Favero worked hard during the race but stumbled after the second mile and finished much slower than expected with a 19:47, still an excellent time, with Joey Casper close behind in 19:59. We ended up finishing just behind Belmont Hill and Roxbury Latin (4 and 3 point losses) due to what turned out to be a mixed finish as both schools had their top times across the board. We did still pull out a victory against Governor's Academy.
