MX Girls’ Cross Country Defeats BBN; Falls to Austin Prep in Season Opener

9/18/2022 9:05:00 AM

The Middlesex Girls' Cross Country team opened the season on its home course, winning against BBN 27-30 and taking second 23-35 to a dominant Austin Prep. Junior Sadie Millett led the Middlesex team in impressive fashion, gapping the field by nearly one minute to take the win. Freshman Angela Huffer followed next for Middlesex, running a gutsy race in a large pack of Austin Prep competitors to place 4th overall. As a young and promising group, the team today practiced running as a unified pack; the next five runners worked together throughout the race and sped down the finishing stretch one after the other, all finishing within 30 seconds of each other to complete the varsity seven. Junior Mitchell Ladd led this group, improving her previous home course personal best by nearly a minute and a half to take 13th in the race; freshman Cassidy Bruno followed next in 14th, junior Kate McBride took 15th, sophomore Catherine Bain took 16th, and freshman Anika Ata finished in 17th.

The Middlesex girls continued to showcase their depth with a dominant JV win against Austin Prep. Freshman Stella Curwin-Amfitheatrof crossed the line as the first place JV scorer and was followed closely by freshman Katie Tantillo and junior Ella Coffin. Junior Florence Morlock, senior Brooke Smith, sophomore Sophia Yang, junior Sawyer Rogers, and senior Ellie Ragosa rounded out the JV squad. Ragosa ran her home course personal best time, an exciting way to open her final season wearing the Middlesex jersey. Every member of the team, from our wonderful manager Fahmida Dina to our runners feeling under-the weather, played an important role in making the first meet of the 2022 season a success.

The team looks forward to competing against The Governor's Academy at Roxbury Latin next Saturday.
