Cogliano '23 Leads Girls' Varsity Lacrosse Over Groton

5/9/2022 2:08:00 PM

The Middlesex Zebras took on the other Zebras from Groton on a cold, windy New England May day. Middlesex peppered the goalie from the start, but the Groton goalie turned away shots as did the goal posts on several occasions. The game remained scoreless for the first 8 minutes of play, but Middlesex lit up the scoreboard with 16:45 remaining. Groton fired back 2 minutes later, and the game went back and forth with Middlesex gaining the slight edge at halftime (6-4). The second half began in similar fashion with both goalies turning away shots for the first 8 minutes of play, but from that moment on, the game took a rapid turn. The Middlesex Zebras claimed 7 unanswered goals as the defense made huge stops thanks to excellent play by Syd "Wogs" Cogliano in the cage, Charley DiAdamo, Siena Berardinelli, Brooke Nye, and Emma "RedFrog" Poplyk. In the last 4 minutes, Groton notched three goals, but it was too little too late as the Zebras held steady to close out the game.  Highlights included senior defender Brooke Nye's first career goal, Katie Athanasoulas' first caused turnover after returning from a 9 month injury, Margeaux Matz and Caroline Cervini's tireless work in the midfield and terrific assists, and beautiful goals by Abby Pratt, Matz, Hannah Barron, and Ali Petrone. Olivia Vlacich notched key ground balls, and Catherine Gettens provided steady, smart play in the attack.
