The Middlesex Baseball team opened its ISL season with a come from behind 5-3 win over St. Mark's on Monday afternoon.
St. Mark's scored single runs in the first and second innings on a wild pitch and a two out single respectively. Middlesex escaped further trouble in the second when with two outs and a runner on second, Eoin Morrissey made a diving stop of a ground ball ticketed for center field. His throw to first was not in time but an alert Kyle Wolff threw a dart to catcher Massimo Mitchell who applied the tag to end the threat.
Starting pitcher Danny Collins settled down in the middle innings but the Middlesex offense remained stymied, registering no hits through four innings as the score remained 2-0.
Nate Crozier brought the Zebras to life with a lead off single up the middle in the top of the 5th inning. One out later, Conor MacLean walked and both runners were moved up by a ringing base hit by Ben Clark. Joe Calo then laced a base hit of his own to make the score 2-1. Sky Platt was hit by a pitch to tie the score and Morrissey delivered a single to give the Zebras a 3-2 lead.
St. Mark's immediately tied the score in the bottom of the 5th on a solo homer by shortstop Dante D'Avanzo but Collins set down the next two hitters to keep the score tied.
Crozier began another rally by drawing a lead off walk and Mitchell's sacrifice bunt attempt was a perfect one as he reached safely for a hit. Following a strikeout, Clark ripped another hit to score Crozier and give the Zebras a 4-3 lead. Calo registered a bunt hit of his own to load the bases and a Platt sacrifice fly put Middlesex up 5-3.
Kyle Wolff came in from the bullpen and pitched around a single and two walks in his two innings of work to shut the door and give Middlesex the win. All six outs came by way of the strikeout in Wolff's appearance.
The Zebras return to the diamond on Wednesday afternoon when they host Tabor Academy at 3:30.
