A deep Groton team visited MX on Wednesday, and though Groton's depth did give them the edge at the bottom of the ladder, MX ultimately prevailed 5-2 in a hard-fought contest. At the top of the ladder, junior Clem Campbell (#1) and sophomore Arya Mehta (#2) each prevailed 3-0. Meanwhile Groton had won the #4 position 3-0, using some power hitting, but MX had broken through at #6, where skillful serving and power hitting of her own allowed sophomore Ema Edwards to prevail 3-0 as well. At #7, junior Jasmine Li lost the first game, but came back to win the second, before Groton's depth deep in the line-up won the day. MX was thus still one match short of victory.
But at #5 senior Catie Barry, though down 5-0 in the first game, came back to win that game 12-10, the next 11-7, before losing decisively in the third game, yet coming back to lead 10-5 in the fourth and win the match on another clever crosscourt forehand, 11-7 in the fourth. With one match left to go, MX was up 4-2. Last to finish was senior Marissa Fadely at #3: Marissa lost the first game to the Groton #3, who retrieved all Marissa's best shots and then counterpunched with lobs and drops. But Marissa's power game led her to fairly straightforward victories in games 2 and 3; however, in game 4, the Groton #4 started off strong, retrieving and counterpunching, and was leading 8-2 at one point. Marissa, however, found another gear, winning 11 of the last 12 points, to win the fourth game and the match 11-9. The Zebras definitely played some of their best squash in this match--covering the court very well and hitting cleanly, with good power and placement. Â
