Rivalry day brought another unpredictable game between Middlesex and St. George's and the hosts came away with a deserved victory for their effort. Middlesex appeared to strike first, as Yared McDonald scored on a set piece in the 3
rd minute, but the goal was disallowed and the score remained level. St. George's broke on a counterattack on the right flank soon afterwards and Henry Powell snuck in behind the Middlesex backline and finished for the 1-0 lead. This held up until halftime as the next 35 minutes were a bit of a slog in the muddy conditions. Middlesex showed signs of life in the first ten minutes of the second half and cashed in on the momentum when Sinjin Doelitzsch finished a feed from Yared McDonald. However, the home team took advantage of the right flank once again and this time Powell played a square ball to Teddy Nemec at the back post to take the 2-1 lead. The last 20 minutes were similar to much of the match, as neither side took control and the passing game never developed. Though the match play was never attractive to watch, there is no denying that St. George's outworked the visitors and deserved their first win of the ISL season. Sinjin Doelitzsch, Aidan O'Sullivan, and Olly Mylon were the standouts for Middlesex on the day.Â
A huge thank goes out to seniors Lincoln Graham, Ben Hitzrot, Yared McDonald, Sky Platt, Leo Vargas and co-Captains Aidan George and Chase Tilson for their leadership throughout the season. The team finishes with a 9-6-4 record with plenty to be proud of and significant growth and improvement throughout the season. Thank you for all the commitment, leadership, and sacrifice from the Class of 2023!
