The 2022 Fall Long Weekend kicked off with a thrilling contest between Groton and Middlesex. Middlesex got off to a strong start in the first 75 seconds of the match, as Zach Miles served an accurate ball onto the head of Aidan O'Sullivan to nod home for the 1-0 lead. The game stayed that way throughout the first half, as Kiefer Wood grew in influence on the dribble and the counterattack. Middlesex carved out a handful of chances, but keeper Benjamin Milner made some excellent saves to keep the game close. As the second half wore on Groton's energy only increased and with just 90 seconds left on the clock Wood poked a loose ball to Daniel Burnham just inside the penalty area on the right side. Burnham rode one challenge that took the ball off his shin and lifted it just enough for him to strike an unstoppable dipping volley into the side panel with his left foot. The Groton bench and players went wild with elation at knotting the score 1-1 so late in the match. In the fourth and final minute of added time, Jonah Zaas drew a foul just outside the left edge of the penalty area after a corner kick. Teddy Fritzinger stepped up and whipped a dipping ball over the keeper and onto the foot of Aidan O'Sullivan for a close-range finish to win the match for Middlesex, 2-1. It was a contest of incredible effort and spirit and both teams should be proud of the character and resiliency displayed.
