Girls' Varsity Squash Sweeps Brooks, 7-0

1/31/2022 9:53:00 AM

Just after semester break, MX traveled to Brooks, always the site for hard-fought matches in recent years. This year was no exception, and when MX lost the first game at #4 and was losing the first game at #6, it looked as if Brooks might well prevail. But the Zebras shook off the rust of the break and found some of their best form of the season: at #4 junior Mia Peng began to hit some sharp backhand drives to the corners to prevail in the last three games (5, 5, 5) after losing the first.  At #6 sophomore Ema Edwards recovered from losing a tight third game to her opponent--who was nailing the ball to the corners--to win 11-8 in the fourth by getting the ball to the back corners before her opponent did. Also in the first round, sophomore Arya Mehta prevailed at #2 3-0. In the second round, junior Jasmine Li at #7 bounced back from losing a tough second game 16-14, to close out her match 11-8, 12-10. Playing after Mia, senior captain Marissa Fadely won the first two games decisively at #3, but fell behind 7-10 in the third game, only to win the game 12-10 with some clutch play. At #1 junior captain Clem Campbell found her groove in the second and third games, winning decisively in three games. And playing her best match of the season, senior Catie Barry chased down every ball, hit strong crosscourts, and got her lob serve going to prevail 3-0 against a strong opponent. The team did an excellent job of coaching one another and cheering each other on. The Zebras next match is against Groton, at home, on February 2.
