Girls' Cross Country Runs Past Governor's in Season Opener

9/19/2021 1:18:00 PM

The Middlesex Girls' Cross Country team made their triumphant return to interscholastic racing, hosting Governor's Academy for an early season dual meet on their 5K home course.  Despite the hiatus, the team ran with poise and made the most of the opportunity, taking the first ten places in the race.  In total, 22 Middlesex runners finished the race, with ten finishing their first race ever in a Middlesex uniform.  The race was won by sophomore Sadie Millett in the first win of her career, who led the pack of her teammates from start to finish, pulling away in the last mile for a decisive win.  She was followed by fellow sophomore Kate McBride and senior Grace Millett (in her first cross country race) who worked together around the course to finish 2nd and 3rd.  Senior captains Mariam Craig and Josie Silk were fourth and fifth for Middlesex, securing the perfect team score, while senior Annabelle Rogers and sophomore Florence Morlock finished in 6th and 7th, earning displacement points over the first runner from Governor's.  Also finishing in the top ten in their first cross country race were sophomore Lilli Boeser (8th), sophomore Mitchell Ladd (9th), and senior Abigail Riordan (10th).  Indeed, it was a great day for those new to the sport, with freshmen Sophia Yang, Catherine Bain, and Lucy Wang, junior Jade Xiao, and seniors Emma Caffrey and Jenny Phan all doing a great job in their first race ever.  Congrats to the whole team (including managers and supporting teammates who did a terrific job managing the details and logistics) for a very successful first race, with special recognition going to senior Charlotte Bain and junior Megan Shi for running a home course PR in their first attempt of the 2021 season.
