The Girls' Soccer team traveled to St. Mark's to open their ISL ledger on a hot September afternoon under bright blue skies.
The Zebras got off to a great start as they pressed St. Mark's all over the field from the opening whistle. The pressure paid off in the 15
th minute as Taryn Gillis '22 took a pass from Carly Tilson '20 and fired it past the St. Mark's goaltender. Middlesex continued to push forward, creating a number of corner kick opportunities, but halftime arrived with the lead staying at 1.
St. Mark's got out of the gates quickly in the second half, turning the tables and putting Middlesex on their heels. The Zebras were unable to shift the momentum, and an unfortunate hand-ball on a shot on goal resulted in a red card and a penalty kick for St. Mark's. Annabel Austen '22 saved the PK, but St. Mark's pounced on the rebound to tie the game. Middlesex maintained its composure and still played for the win, but St. Mark's was able to capitalize on an odd-person situation and deposited the game-winner with just minutes remaining.
The girls showed great heart and determination throughout the afternoon, and they should feel proud of their effort.
MXGVS returns to action Wednesday, when they welcome Tabor to Chapel Field.
